Sierra Leone has a tropical climate with two main seasons that strongly affect agriculture:
1. The Rainy Season (May–October)
Sierra Leone receives most of its rainfall during this period.
Characteristics
- Heavy rainfall, especially from July to September.
- Rivers, streams, and wetlands fill with water.
- Temperatures are slightly cooler than during the dry season.
- Humidity is very high.
Agricultural Activities
Land Preparation (April–May)
Farmers:
- Clear bushes and fields.
- Burn vegetation in upland farming areas.
- Prepare rice swamps and lowlands.
Planting (May–July)
Major crops planted include:
- Rice (the country’s main food crop)
- Cassava
- Maize (corn)
- Groundnuts (peanuts)
- Sweet potatoes
- Vegetables such as okra and pepper
Crop Growth (June–September)
- Crops grow rapidly because of abundant rain.
- Farmers weed fields and control pests.
- Fertilizer may be applied where available.
2. The Dry Season (November–April)
Characteristics
- Little or no rainfall.
- Lower humidity.
- The Harmattan wind from the Sahara may bring dusty conditions between December and February.
Agricultural Activities
Harvesting (October–January)
Farmers harvest:
- Rice
- Maize
- Groundnuts
- Cassava
- Other food crops
Processing and Storage
After harvest:
- Rice is dried and stored.
- Cassava is processed into gari, fufu, and other products.
- Groundnuts are dried for storage and sale.
Dry-Season Farming (November–April)
Where water is available, farmers grow:
- Tomatoes
- Onions
- Lettuce
- Cabbage
- Peppers
- Other vegetables
This period is particularly suitable for vegetable production because diseases and weeds are less common than during the rainy season.
